Gel nails
By Wityy Banter
More and more women are choosing to have nail enhancements. The new generation gel nails are very popular because they aren't as damaging to the natural nail as their predecessors were and they let more oxygen get to it, allowing the nail to grow freely underneath. Over the years I've had stick-on false nails, and thick acrylic overlays which made my own weak nails even worse. I was encouraged to try gel nails as I was told they are much gentler and would help me to grow my own natural nails. UV gel comes in pots ready to use. Layers of the soft, liquid gel are carefully brushed onto the nail bed and the hand is then placed under a UV light which "bakes" or "cures" the gel and hardens it. This bonds to the real nail and forms a very hard shell, ensuring long-lasting and hard-wearing nails. Many nail technicians approve of gel because it's self-levelling which means that less buffing is needed, thereby reducing the possibility of damaging the real nail and cuticle. Unlike acrylic, there are no chemicals involved in the hardening process. Because of this, when the natural nails grow out and the gel is removed, usually the natural nails are in better condition than before the gel was applied. Gel nails often have a "shiny" finish, as if the nails have had a coat of clear nail polish. This smooth, high-gloss finish prolongs the life of nail polish and reduces the likelihood of chipping. UV gel makes nails beautiful, flexible and strong and it promotes the growth of natural nails. It is particularly suitable for clients who wish to protect their own nails whilst growing them. Following the application of the overlays (covering the whole nail for the first time), regular in-fills are required to maintain the strength and the look of the nails. The space between in-fills depends on the individual, as some people's nails grow faster than others. I go every two - three weeks and I am amazed at just how much they have grown since my last visit to the salon. For occasional breaks, the gel can be used to "sculpt" some extra length onto the broken nail, so that the rest of them don't have to be filed right down to the level of the broken one. The sculpting gel is opaque like a real nail and gives a perfectly natural look. It lasts until the natural nail grows out, so you get the length without having to have false tips glued on. This extended bit of nail looks and feels just like the real thing. There are of course risks to having anything applied to the natural nail bed. If the gel nails lift or peel from the real nail, or if they cause a burning sensation it may be an allergy to the products and they should be removed as soon as possible. In order not to damage the natural nail, the gel needs to be soaked off in a solution of acetone rather than being ripped or peeled off. In a nutshell, gel nails are beautiful, thin, strong and flexible. What more could a girl want? |
